Computer Forensics is the science of identifying, recovering, extracting, preserving, and documenting ESI (Electronically Stored Information) so that it can be presented as evidence in a court of law.
Information (data) is stored in digital format on computer hard drives. When the hard drive "fails", data is "corrupted" or a person intentionally tries to destroy the files to "hide" information, stored data is considered lost.
Computer forensics requires a trained examiner to verify the data is collected in a forensically consistent manner to preserve any data on the media. If an untrained examiner is used data may be missed, deleted or permanently destroyed.
